This book deep dives into the different facets of each of the 6 habits of growth - Motivation, Focus, Confidence, Energy, Purpose, Leadership.

Each chapter focuses on a habit and has good explanations of what’s important and why. The chapters include good examples of how to use and harness to improve your life.

A. MOTIVATION

  • Every action is proceeded by motive
  • Make motivation more conscious - create trigger habits
  • Ability to summon motivation when needed = success
  • Tools to increase motivation:
    1. Raise Ambition - focus on a better future, don’t get stuck in the past. Do not tie you ambitions to the acceptance/expectations of others
    1. Positive Expectancy - expect the goal is possible - believe you can do it, what steps will you take to achieve it
    1. Progress Principle - momentum compounds motivation - take action!

B. FOCUS

  • Assess areas for life improvement, identify what improvement is needed
  • Focus on building towards your future
  • Identify the best of who you could be
  • Plan and allow time to focus on important things
  • Build in time for physical health. Physical health is directly related to mental health.
  • Use M.E.D.S Rx - Meditation, Exercise, Diet, Sleep, Relationships, eXtras (supplemental activities)
  • Peer consequence accountability - let others know what you are committing to, this helps you stay accountable
  • Create trigger for habit e.g. Doorway Trigger, each time you walk thru a doorway, repeat an affirmation
  • Journal to capture your goals, thoughts, ideas, insights -> allows you to focus
  • Focus on things that matter, don’t waste time

C. CONFIDENCE

  • Belief in one’s ability work things out - self trust
  • Self doubt is normal = signal to learn, develop, prepare, get better - NOT signal to stop
  • Self doubt is often a limitation imposed by others / past voices
  • Use self doubt as trigger to get better
  • When you experience self doubt it is a signal to take action - do something, do not stew and do nothing
  • You’re not lacking - you just haven’t done the thing enough, the more you do, the more familiar, the more confidence you grow
  • Have long term view of self improvement
  • Clarity - who you are, what you are after
  • Clarity causes conviction - knowing what you want allows you to go for it

D. ENERGY

  • If tired or fatigued try M.E.D.S Rx method
  • Meditation - release mental tension
  • Exercise
  • Diet
  • Sleep - 3,2,1 rule. Before sleep - 3 hours before, no food, 2 hours before, no work, 1 hour before, no screens.
  • Make your to-do list before bed - free your mind
  • Relationships - avoid people with negative energy / connect with people with positive energy. People around you influence your energy levels positively or negatively
  • eXtras - recharge every 50 mins, take a break, more proactive breaks = more focus, better performance, take breaks from people, take relationship pitstop
  • Stress - self imposed meanings to things that cause extra mental burden
  • Stress can be reduced if we train our minds to focus on things beyond ourselves
  • Change physical state to break stress thought patterns
  • Create small to-do lists to allow focus

E. PURPOSE

  • Live a purposeful life
  • Don’t be restricted by one purpose, there are different aspects to your life
  • Purpose shift - understand what’s important for the day and focus with mindful intention
  • Generate purpose - follow your passion, start with intention, do more with others, connect socially with others
  • Journal to reflect - become more aware of micro lessons
  • Celebrate, social celebrations, celebrate with others - social connections,
  • Purpose is created when we mentor others
  • Create a legacy - understand your end of life questions

F. LEADER

  • People support what they create
  • Collaborate, have input, involved in process, be part of decisions
  • Leadership is about togetherness
  • Challenge others to do better
  • Working through things is not conflict
  • Let’s work together and move ahead
  • Lead with compassion, understanding, praise
  • Help people grow -> capability -> competency -> confidence
  • No final outcome, you are always growing improving, getting better.

Lots of ideas to sift through and to cherry pick to adopt for what’s useful.
